Tourists were surprised to find the ancient archaeological site of Pompeii closed on Friday morning ahead of the holiday period. The gates were closed at 9 am for a meeting of members of four unions. Italy’s Culture Minister Dario Franceschini said the action had caused “incalculable damage” to Pompeii by alienating visitors.
