As the European Commission released its latest progress report on candidate countries, MEPs Riho Terras (EPP) and Pasquale Tridico (The Left Group) go head to head over one of Europe's most ambitious political projects.

From the Western Balkans to the Southern Caucasus and Europe’s eastern flank, the Euronews Enlargement Summit revealed a European Union closer to expansion than at any point in the past decade – but also the political obstacles that could still derail it.

In this edition of The Ring, Estonian MEP Riho Terras from the European People's Party (EPP) and his Italian counterpart Pasquale Tridico from The Left went through all the arguments discussed at the event.

Leaders gathered in Brussels to discuss candidate countries’ ambitions to join the EU, and whether the bloc is ready to admit them as the prospect of expansion looks more real than it has in years.

From Ukraine and Georgia to Montenegro and Armenia, each country faces its own mix of political sensitivities, painstaking reforms and diplomatic hurdles. Progress can be swift, but setbacks can be equally dramatic.

This episode of The Ring is hosted by Stefan Grobe, produced by Luis Albertos and Amaia Echevarria, and edited by Vassilis Glynos.
