The film, which won the Special Jury Prize at Cannes, is currently on release in Hungary.
Saul, incarcerated in Auschwitz, escapes the gas chambers by becoming a Sonderkommando a body of Jews which helped the SS do its dirty work such as filling and emptying the crematoria.
While carrying out his dreadful duties he recognises the body of his son. In a quest to retrieve his sense of humanity he is determined to bury his boy with dignity.
This is an exceptionally hard-hitting first feature, still the film has its subtleties it constantly suggests more that it shows.
Saul is filmed in close-up and the camera captures the characters agonising despair.
