The Chauvet Cave in southern France is one of the most famous prehistoric rock art sites in the world.
It was discovered in 1994, but most of the paintings inside date back 36,000 years, making them the oldest examples of cave art ever found.
To preserve the location, recently named a UNESCO World Heritage site, and to protect the art, it is not open to the public, however Caverne du Pont-d’Arc, an exact replica of the cave displaying reproductions of the paintings and engravings will open later this month after today’s (April 10) inauguration by French President Francois Hollande.
