In this edition of U-talk, our question comes from Franck, in Toulouse, France, who wants to ask the European Ombudsman what his role is and how people can get in touch with him.
P. Nikiforos Diamandouros, European Ombudsman responds:
“The European Ombudsman is recognised by the Treaties as a non-judicial means of redress, available to all European citizens, in addition of course to the courts which are the traditional means of redress. That means that if citizens are having a problem with the European administration – and that means any institution in the European Union.
“That includes the Parliament, European Commission, the Council even the European Council and includes the courts in their non-judicial functions – anybody (complaining) about any institution can come to me if they have a problem with a European institution.
“It’s very easy to come to me: you can use our website and then, the website will tell you how to get to me. We have an interactive guide which leads you, question by question. You click on your mouse and you get the answer so you can actually find the right institution first time around.
“If you don’t want to do it through the web, you can send us a fax, or can email us and we will answer you usually within 72 hours, but certainly within one week.”
