The Sky Line shuttle was meant to provide a quick, hassle-free link to Frankfurt Airport’s new, modern Terminal 3. But it now has to be “inspected”, so passengers must make do with shuttle buses.
Welcome to Frankfurt Airport – and the new Sky Line train (Line 2) is out of service until further notice. That is what travellers are being told on site and what anyone checking the website of Germany’s largest airport will read.

The suspension is due to “necessary technical inspections and adjustments to the overall system”. Passengers now have to use shuttle buses instead of the new train, running back and forth every day between Terminals 1, 2 and 3.
Yet the new Sky Line had only been opened at Frankfurt Airport a month ago. On its 5.6-kilometre route, the driverless train is designed to carry up to 4,000 Schengen and non-Schengen passengers per hour from Terminal 1 to Terminal 3. The idea was to offer a fast, efficient and free service, getting passengers to their destination in just eight minutes. Twelve trains, each made up of two carriages, are meant to run on the line, connecting Frankfurt Airport’s regional and long-distance railway stations with Terminal 3.
It is currently unclear when the Sky Line will once again live up to these promises. Operator Fraport has asked for passengers’ understanding and says it is working to get the train back in service as quickly as possible.
According to Frankfurt Airport, Terminal 3 is intended to usher in a new era. The move from Terminal 2 to Terminal 3 is scheduled to be completed on 9 June, and the operator says the new terminal will have capacity for up to 19 million passengers a year. Fraport has invested a total of four billion euros in the project. However, the promised “perfect connection” has been somewhat delayed by the Sky Line being out of action.
