Germany’s Interior Minister, Thomas de Maiziere, has said it is too early to speculate about the cause of the deadly truck crash in Berlin, but initial indications are pointing to an attack of some sort. He and the capital’s mayor, Michael Müller have briefed Chancellor Angela Merkel on the situation.

“The situation is now under control. It is depressing, especially at this time of year, to see and to experience something that our friends in other cities have already experienced.”

Neighbouring France, which is still under a state of emergency following a string of terror attacks, has vowed to continue working with Germany ‘with no respite’. Its Interior Ministry says security at Christmas markets nationwide will be reinforced with immediate effect.

In Washington, the White House has also condemned the attack.
