Forty knives have been surgically removed from the stomach of a police officer in northern India. Why he swallowed them remains unclear.

Surgeons in the city of Amritsar spent five hours operating on the 42-year-old who had complained of severe abdominal pain after consuming the blades over a period of two months.

According to some reports, the man said ‘spiritual powers’ made him swallow the knives.

Doctors say he will undergo a psychological assessment before being discharged from hospital.
