European Commission warns Poland to respect rule of law but decides not to sanction Spain and Portugal for overspending

While UK Prime Minister Teresa May was touring around Europe to prepare Brexit negotiations, the European Commission appointed Michel Barnier as their official Brexit negotiator. The former French EU commissioner for financial markets is well known both in Brussels and London.

Yesterday was a busy day for the European Commission in Brussels, before they close for summer holidays. Decisions were taken not to sanction Spain and Portugal for overspending in 2015, and to send warnings to Warsaw to adapt a new law regarding the constitutional court to assure rule of law in Poland. They country has three months to respond.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will speak to press in Berlin today about the recent attacks in Germany.
