European governments are failing to ensure citizens have access to free and independent justice and media, a watchdog report has warned.
The Council of Europe, made up of 47 countries and based in Strasbourg, France, identified “serious problems” in the running of key democratic institutions.
Thorbjørn Jagland, Council of Europe Secretary General, told euronews: “We have serious problems in one third of the member states, with regard to the independence of the judiciary and also related to freedom of media and of course these two institutions: the media and the courts are indispensable of a free democracy.’
The report doesn’t, however’, name and shame countries
But the document does cite in the footnotes some members by name.
Russia and Turkey appear in a footnote on media freedom.
