A fire in a New Delhi building killed at least 18 people and injured several others, with rescue teams pulling dozens from the Malviya Nagar block.

A fire swept through a building in New Delhi on Wednesday, killing at least 18 people and injuring several others, according to the Press Trust of India. The blaze broke out in Malviya Nagar, a residential area in the south of the city.

The building housed a restaurant on the ground floor and apartments above. Fire crews rescued 37 people from inside before bringing the fire under control.

Officials said the cause is still under investigation.

Some of the victims were foreign nationals who had travelled to India for medical treatment, local media reported. Images from the scene showed thick smoke and firefighters working alongside residents to evacuate those trapped inside.
