Video. Extreme heat and floods sweep across Italy, leaving two dead

Updated:

A deadly mix of soaring temperatures and sudden flooding left two people dead in Italy on Monday, as an African anticyclone drives extreme weather across Europe.

Torrential rains pounded northern Italy on Monday, causing rivers to overflow and triggering floods and landslides near the town of Bardonecchia.

A 70-year-old man drowned after the Frejus river flooded during heavy rain, sweeping mud and water onto nearby roads.

Meanwhile, near Bologna, a 47-year-old construction worker collapsed during a concrete pour, with heatstroke suspected as the cause.

With parts of Spain and Portugal reaching extreme temperatures and France topping 40°C, experts are warning that climate change is driving more frequent and deadly weather events across Europe.

Authorities have issued yellow and red alerts for 17 cities in Italy, including Florence and Rome, urging people to stay indoors. Several regions have now banned outdoor work during peak heat hours.
