On the 49th anniversary of Argentina’s 1976 military coup, thousands gathered in Buenos Aires to honour victims and demand justice.

Thousands gathered in Buenos Aires on Monday to commemorate the 49th anniversary of Argentina’s 1976 military coup, which led to a brutal dictatorship lasting seven years.

Human rights groups, including the Mothers and Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo, marched to demand justice for the estimated 30,000 people who were killed or forcibly disappeared. Official figures list 12,000 victims, but activists argue the true number is far higher.

President Javier Milei’s government has downplayed the junta’s crimes but ordered the declassification of military documents, claiming past administrations used them as political tools.
