Ice crosses chopped and taken to church in Epiphany eve tradition

Video. Ice crosses ready for Epiphany celebrations

Updated:

Preparations for Epiphany are underway in Orthodox churches, with a key tradition being the blessing of ice crosses.

In Romania, villagers in Rãucesti craft impressive two-metre-high crosses using chainsaws, while in Galati, local artisans carve 40kg ice crosses.

On Epiphany, the faithful gather by the Danube for the sacred water consecration and a tradition where young participants dive into the river to catch the cross thrown by the Archbishop.

With warmer temperatures, modern techniques are now used to carve the crosses from ice.
