Beaujolais Nouveau ritual uncorking

Video. France celebrates Beaujolais Nouveau 2024 release

Updated:

Beaujolais Nouveau was officially uncorked at midnight on 20-21 November 2024, continuing a cherished tradition that dates back to the 1950s and gained global popularity in the 1980s.

Each third Thursday in November, celebrations spread across France and beyond, marking the arrival of this young, fruity wine made from the Gamay grape, cultivated some thirty kilometres north of Lyon.

Once criticised for its uniformity and lack of complexity, Beaujolais Nouveau has evolved in recent decades. Winemakers now focus on producing wines that better reflect the terroir and style of each estate. Jean-Marc Lafont, President of the Beaujolais Interprofession, notes that today, every Beaujolais Nouveau is a unique expression of its maker.

The unveiling of Beaujolais Nouveau is one of the biggest events in the world of wine, half of which is exported, notably to Japan, the United States and the United Kingdom
