Fetching fancy dress was on display at Dunkerque’s carnival, an extravaganza aimed at “recharging people’s batteries for the year ahead”. The carnival, linked to the Mardi Gras festival, includes a march which is said to be capped off with crowds chanting they want the “herring they deserve”, echoing the town’s links with the fishing industry. It’s tradition for the mayor to then throw herring from the balcony of the town hall.
