İstanbul is a city that never stops. When the sun goes down, the streets light up with open-air clubs, raucous taverns and immersive river cruises

As the only city in the world to straddle two continents, İstanbul has a unique flavour. As a meeting place for peoples from far-flung corners of the world for the last 2,000 years, the city has evolved today into an eclectic mix of culture, food and entertainment.

By day, visitors are engulfed by Türkiye’s rich culture, from mosaic-clad mosques and historic museums to maze-like bazaars and traditional Turkish baths.

It’s at night, however, that the city truly comes alive. İstanbul sports a nighttime scene which runs far into the early hours, seducing visitors with rooftop dance clubs, sunset dinner cruises and bustling food markets. Here’s a selection of things not to miss out on as the moon rises over İstanbul.

Hit the dancefloor

It might not be a capital city, but İstanbul sure behaves like one. Its selection of nightclubs are many and varied, exceptional venues in their own right which also play host to world-class DJs.

The shores of the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus are replete with clubs blending beautiful views with top-quality music. Ravers should make a bee-line for Kuruçeşme, Ortaköy, and Bebek, whose party-pleasing venues offer music, dancefloors and bars to fit everyone’s taste.

Ruby, a three-floor club in Beşiktaş, serves international cuisine by day, and at night, becomes a hub for dancers and live music lovers. The top and bottom floors transform into neon-lit dancefloors, while the middle section dishes up cocktails and snacks in a stylish lounge space.

Night owls should also seek out 360 İstanbul, whose penthouse position in Beyoğlu sports unparalleled views of the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara, while providing invigorating performances from live dancers and DJs well into the early hours.

Bar hop in Beyoğlu

If bar-hopping, not clubbing, is more your scene, İstiklal Avenue is the place to go. This elongated pedestrianised street is lined with bars, restaurants and meyhanes – Turkish taverns – many housed in Ottoman-era art nouveau and neo-classical buildings.

Meyhanes are an integral part of Turkish culture, famed for their marvellous mezze and communal atmospheres; they’re a place where locals catch up, sip on anise-infused rakı and sway to traditional music. Çiçek Pasajı is an arcade housing multiple meyhanes, and a great place to sample their lively atmosphere.

Alternatively, start your night at Sofyali 9, one of the longest-standing taverns in the city, before heading on to casual cocktails at Yuri Gagarin, a watering hole with seats set out beneath İstikal Avenue’s iconic colourful umbrellas.

For early evening jazz beats, reasonable prices and beautiful Bosphorus views, try Balkon Restaurant & Bar, or opt for Ziba, an off-the-main-street corner bar with a reputation for fantastic live music.

Late-Night Street Food

Nighttime in İstanbul isn’t all about drinking and dancing, its famed food scene also extends well past sunset. Most restaurants dish out hearty meals late into the night, but there are a host of street food vendors available in the early hours to satisfy hunger pangs while on the move too.

Food stalls are scattered around the city, but there are especially plentiful options in the animated areas of Galata, Taksim and Karaköy. These are a great opportunity to sample some local delicacies: kokoreç (chargrilled offal wrapped in sheep intestines and coated liberally in spices and salt), balık ekmek (grilled fish sandwiches), and of course, döner kebabs.

Sumptuous soups and seafood snacks including midye dolma (stuffed mussels) are also among the offerings. Don’t miss an evening stroll along the lower deck of Galata Bridge, which is a mecca for seafood lovers and features an array of tucked-away restaurants serving up delicious cuts from the day’s catch.

Fine dining and bosphorus Views

İstanbul’s gastronomy has reached new heights with a prestigious array of Michelin-starred and Selected restaurants that redefine the city’s culinary map. From sleek rooftops in Beyoğlu to elegant waterfront manors, these fine-dining establishments offer sophisticated interpretations of Turkish heritage alongside international techniques. For a truly elevated evening, you can immerse yourself in the creative tasting menus of the city's top chefs, where every dish is paired with an extensive selection of local Anatolian wines.

While many of these world-class tables overlook the water, you can also take to the Bosphorus itself for a classic perspective. A dinner cruise along the serene waters of the Golden Horn offers a chance to see the Blue Mosque and Topkapı Palace illuminated against the night sky.

Whether you are enjoying a refined meal at a Michelin-recommended terrace or dining on a private yacht with a personal guide, the city’s waterfront remains the ultimate backdrop for an indomitable evening.

Go to a gig

İstanbul draws some of the biggest names in music to its shores. 2025 saw global superstars including Justin Timberlake, Jennifer Lopez and Martin Garrix wowed crowds across the city in venues including the 10,000 seater Festival Park Yenikapı. This year’s slate is set to be just as impressive, with indie darlings Kasabian and Wolf Alice, and electronic legends Gorillaz, just some of the acts stepping up.

True to its cross-cultural roots, İstanbul is a hub for global arts, and classical concerts, ballet, and opera are all regular features of its evening entertainment schedule. The Atatürk Cultural Centre is the epicentre of İstanbul’s arts offerings, boasting a calendar chock-full of evening events in its theatre, concert halls, cinema, museum and art gallery. It’s also the host venue of the İstanbul Music Festival, which has been running for over 50 years.
