The operator of Italy's gas grid says the system is secure despite the state of emergency declared after the Baumgarten blast.

Marco Alvera is from the SNAM:

"On a very cold day like Wednesday without the Russian gas, which is the main supplier, if you don't want to touch demand - so keeping the demand flowing at the maximum rate - you can manage around a week.'

There is a price warning, however.

"Governments should worry about the wholesale price because eventually spike in the wholesale price will go through to consumers. The best thing that the governments in Europe can do is to create the energy union which helps for solidarity but also for prices and to increase storage. Because if you have storage you can buy cheap LNG in the summer and produce it in the winter"

The hub is an important one for European gas transit, with natural gas transported to Baumgarten via Slovakia and Germany via several cross-border pipelines.

Gas flows are then delivered throughout Europe via Austria's transmission network.
