BlackBerry is suing Nokia in the United States accusing it of violating 11 technology patents.

The once mighty mobile phone companies BlackBerry and Nokia are in the headlines again, not for their handsets but because of a legal battle.

BlackBerry is suing telecoms equipment maker Nokia in the United States saying it infringed 11 of the Canadian company’s patents for various mobile networking technology.

Court documents show Blackberry does not want to block the use of that tech but is seeking financial compensation.

It is not the first time the two have turned to lawyers to sort out difference, in 2012 Nokia won a ruling against Blackberry over patent use.

Neither company makes handsets any more, instead they licence their names to third-party manufacturers.

Last December, Nokia filed a string of lawsuits against Apple for violating its patents.
