Losing only 2.7% doesn’t sound too bad compared to nearly 5% in February, but against rivals picking up nearly 6% in sales market share is under pressure.
The company is still struggling to dispel the bad smell from the diesel scandal, and has botched a German vehicle recall.
However growth remained solid in VW’s biggest market, China.
A deadline for VW and U.S. regulators to agree a solution for manipulated U.S. cars expires next week.
