The French carmaker said it was a preventative move to check brake fluid hoses that could rupture. They will be replaced if necessary.
It does not believe the fault had caused any accidents.
The recall affects about a quarter of all Zoes and covers models built between their launch in 2012 and October 2014.
A majority of them have been sold in France.
Renault has invested more than most other manufacturers in battery powered cars, but sales still lag far behind conventional vehicles.
