Reports from Spain say Volkswagen’s subsidiary Seat may have equipped over half a million cars with tampered diesel engines.
According to the newspaper El País, in theory they are the same as the engines used by Volkswagen and Audi in the United States, where an investigation is underway into falsified emissions tests.
Seat’s plant at Martorell near Barcelona allegedly installed the engines in vehicles from 2009 until this year.
El País says Seat has admitted to ‘having equipped some vehicles with the Volkswagen Group’s EA189 engines’, without specifying how many.
The company has replied that models currently on sale are no longer equipped with the altered engines – and all new vehicles comply with regulations.
Seat is Spain’s second-most popular car brand – after VW.
