The 4th International Mine Action Conference examined the challenges of clearing contaminated land and supporting safe resettlement, with discussions focusing on demining, reconstruction, international cooperation and shared expertise.

For communities returning to areas affected by conflict, the first challenge is often beneath their feet. Mines and unexploded ordnance can prevent resettlement and delay the rebuilding of homes, roads and essential infrastructure. The fourth International Mine Action Conference brought together experts from more than 60 countries to discuss the challenges of making contaminated land safe.

In Azerbaijan, demining is being carried out alongside reconstruction, while other countries shared lessons from their own experience of clearing land after conflict.

For many communities, clearing the land is the first step towards rebuilding, restoring infrastructure and returning to everyday life.
