A gunman who opened fire on people in Kyiv on Saturday, has left at least six dead and others wounded, the Ukrainian capital's mayor Vitali Klitschko said. According to police the man has now been shot dead after barricading himself in a nearby supermarket.

At least six people have been killed and 10 were injured, including a child, in a shooting which occurred in the Holosiivskyi district of the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, as well as taking hostages. “Medics are transporting the child to the hospital. Wounded adults are being examined and provided with assistance on site,” Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that a sixth victim, a young woman, had died from her injuries in the hospital.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on X, "Ukraine’s Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko has just reported that the attacker in Kyiv who opened fire on civilians has been eliminated".

According to Klymenko, special tactical police units stormed the store where the gunman was sheltering after "attempts to contact the gunman with a negotiator failed. The attacker was killed while resisting arrest," he said.

The Ukrainian Minister of Internal Affairs provided no speculation as to the assailant's motives, but said that police negotiators spoke with the attacker for roughly 40 minutes.

The President added, "All the circumstances are being established. At present, 5 people have been confirmed killed. My condolences to the families and loved ones. Ten people are currently hospitalised with injuries and trauma. All are receiving the necessary assistance. Four hostages have been rescued".

The Ukrainian Prosecutor General announced that the shooter was a 58-year-old native from Moscow. Ukrainian media reported that he had obtained Ukrainian citizenship and had previously lived in Bakhmut, Donetsk Oblast, before later moving to Kyiv’s Holosiivskyi district.
