Video. Toxic fire at illegal Sarajevo landfill raises health concerns

Updated:

A persistent underground fire at the illegal Krupačke stijene landfill in the Krupac area is sending toxic smoke across western parts of the city.

The fire, burning from within layers of plastic and medical waste, is proving nearly impossible to extinguish quickly.

Authorities say it could take several days to put out.

Air pollution levels have surged, with PM10 and PM2.5 particles far above safe limits.

Residents are advised to stay indoors, shut windows, wear masks, and use air purifiers if possible.

Health officials warn that the smoke is especially dangerous for children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with chronic conditions.
