Video. Protesters clash with police in Athens over 2023 rail disaster

Updated:

Anger over the 2023 rail disaster sparked violent clashes in Athens as protesters demanded political accountability. The unrest followed a no-confidence motion, though the government is expected to withstand Friday’s vote.

Protesters clashed with riot police outside Greece's parliament late Wednesday, in renewed demonstrations demanding accountability for the 2023 rail disaster that killed 57 people.

In Syntagma Square, youths set fire to trash bins, prompting riot police to respond with tear gas and baton charges. There were no immediate reports of injuries or arrests.

The unrest followed a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ government, which is expected to survive Friday’s vote. Victims' families have led the protests, insisting politicians, not just rail officials, be held accountable.
