Eight people spent their New Year’s Eve stuck in a funfair ride that broke down in Rennes, Brittany, said the AFP.

The ride suffered a technical problem when the people inside it were high up in the air.

A first rescue mission by firefighters failed and the trapped riders had to wait for a helicopter to get them out of the ride, said local media.

At around 8:30 pm (CET) on Monday night, the funfair ride started throwing sparks, as the video shared on Facebook shows, before completely breaking down.

People were still stuck in the ride at 1:00 am, spending several hours high in the air. At 5:59 am on Tuesday morning, Rennes mayor, Nathalie Appere, tweeted that the rescue operation had finished.

Local reporters shared videos on Twitter of the second rescue operation.
