The co-founders of Instagram, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, have announced they are leaving the company. The photo-sharing app was bought by Facebook in 2012 but the pair stayed on at the helm. Now the two say they are ready for the next chapter and to explore their curiosity and creativity again.

Since Instagram started in 2010, its grown to over a billion users. At first, the app only worked on iPhones but that soon changed as its popularity became apparent. Needless to say, Instagram soon caught the attention of Facebook who ended up buying it for 850 million euros. There have been reports of tension between Facebook and the pair although there are no signs of animosity in their departing statements nor those of Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg who said he had enjoyed working with them and looked forward to seeing what they build next.
