Ex-marine spotted by Kubrick after being hired as a technical adviser.
Lee Ermey, the Vietnam War veteran who played Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in "Full Metal Jacket", has died aged 74. The former Marine was hired by Stanley Kubrick as a technical adviser for the film but was so good training extras he was given a part himself. He went on to feature in some 60 films.
