Predecessor resigns through illness

A close ally of Aung San Suu Kyi is the new president of Myanmar.

Win Myint was chosen by both chambers of parliament where Suu Kyi's ruling partyhas a comfortable majority.  His predecessor resigned through illness.

The country's constitution bars Suu Kyi herself from taking the top office.
