The Spanish State Prosecutor has asked for Puigdemont's arrest warrant to be reactivated.

Denmark's prosecutor has rejected a possible arrest warrant against exiled former Catalan Leader Carles Puigdemont.

Spain's State Prosecutor had asked the Supreme Court to reactivate the international arrest warrant.

Puigdemont is wanted by the Spanish central government for his role in organising an illegal independence referendum in Catalonia last year. He hasn’t returned to the region since.

Puigdemont has arrived in Denmark to participate in a debate organised by the University of Copenhagen.

  • He has not returned to Spain for three months, and the Spanish President Mariano Rajoy says he's not allowed to govern remotely.

Given Mr Puigdemont’s brief visit to Denmark it’s unlikely there will be time for an arrest to be made. Him merely leaving Belgium however is a bold mood which will aggravate Madrid.
