Spanish government is set to impose direct rule over Catalonia as crisis spirals

The Spanish Senate prepares to vote today on Article 155 that would allow Madrid to take back control of the region and block Catalonia’s push for independence.

“Exceptional measures should only be adopted when no other remedy is possible” said Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy in an address to the Senate. “In my opinion there is no alternative. The only thing that can be done and should be done is to accept and comply with the law.”
