Half a day in Wimbledon Village

Wimbledon is known around the world for its idyllic lawns, manicured purple and white flowers and strawberries. So much so that for some it might be surprising to hear that the village predates the tennis club. Much has changed as a result of the millions of spectators who attend the tournament but the charm of a place that both is part of London, and a world of its own, remains.

A sight

The Commons is a small park with a gorgeous pond in the middle of an open field surrounded by woods. A museum in the town centre looks back to the Iron Age origins of the settlement.

A hotel

Many pubs have accommodation offering a bed-and-breakfast-style experience that combines charm and luxury.

A restaurant The Ivy restaurant – a garden themed institution with terrace and variety of international or brasserie style cuisine – is an iconic London institution. If you want to enjoy a more low key vibe with outdoor seating and tasty coffee then visit Maison St Cassien. Or a fast pizza & pasta at the chain Carluccio’s which is great for kids.

A purchase

Obviously, Wimbledon souvenirs abound but it’s also the perfect time to take advantage of sales season in the high-street shops. International brands such as Max Mara or a Matches have taken on the local look by taking over quaint, uneven historic buildings. And when you are done, there are those laid-back pubs to enjoy a beer in.
