Officials have rejected claims FC Barcelona shirts have been banned in Saudi Arabia amid escalating tensions between Qatar and several Arab states.

Sky Italy reported wearing the football top, which has Qatar Airways emblazoned across its front, could land offenders a 135,000-euro fine.

But both FC Barcelona and the Saudi Arabian embassy in France have denied the suggestions.

United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt severed economic and diplomatic ties with Qatar last week, alleging it supported terrorist groups and Iran.

The story emerged after the UAE issued a statement via its attorney general threatening anyone who showed support towards Qatar on social networks with a prison sentence or fine.

Euronews was unable to verify Sky Italy’s story.
