The french artist is known as the man who brought sculpture to life

Auguste Rodin saw the body as a mould for human passions.

One hundred years after his death, Paris is hosting a wide-ranging retrospective of the celebrated sculptor’s work.

The aim is to offer a fresh perspective on Rodin’s work, famous for techniques of uncompromising realism which bring his sculptures to life.

Rodin Centenary exhibition – four things

  • 200 sculptures and drawings
  • 100 years since Rodin’s death
  • 22 March to 31 July
  • Grand Palais in Paris

The exhibition also brings together a large number of works by artists like Brancusi, Picasso, Giacometti and Gormley and inspired by the man who described sculpture as “the art of the hole and the lump”.

Rodin – in his own words

“Beauty is everywhere”

“The main thing is to be moved, to love, to hope, to tremble, to live. Be a man before being an artist.”

“Nothing is a waste of time if you use the experience wisely.”

“The work of art is already within the block of marble. I just chop off whatever is not needed.”

“Patience is also a form of action.”

“I invent nothing, I rediscover.”

“Sculpture is the art of the hole and the lump.”
