Three people were killed and two critically injured when their light aircraft plunged into a house in a residential neighbourhood of southern California.

The Cessna 310 crashed at around 1630 local time. It had just taken off from Riverside Municipal Airport, 100 kilometres east of Los Angeles.

Who died in the crash?

The pilot and two passengers.

The two survivors, both women, were found inside the ruined house. They are in a critical condition.

The house was empty at the time.

The scene

TV footage shows firefighters spraying water on several houses in the street which are on fire.

A local Red Cross officials says at least five families have been forced to leave their homes.

Where were the passengers from?

San Jose in northern California.

They had been in the area for a cheerleading event at Disneyland.

Has there been any statement from the authorities?

Yes.

FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said the plane crashed “under unknown circumstances” shortly after taking off from the airport, bound for San Jose.

The incident will be investigated by the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board.
