Billed as a delicate diplomatic mission, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau arrived in Washington earlier on Monday for his first talks with President Donald Trump.
There was a warm greeting as the two men met at the White House.
Economic ties are expected to top talks, rather than the much trickier issue of immigration, on which both have voiced starkly different views.
The meeting comes as Donald Trump tries to reinstate a travel ban on several, mainly Muslim, countries.
The US president’s pledge to renegotiate the NAFTA free trade deal is also said to have unnerved Canadian officials.
Despite that, ahead of the their meeting Trudeau said he expected “to find a lot of common ground” with Trump.
