All casualties were said to be local residents who were passing over the suspension bridge on a resort island off Bali for a religious ceremony at a nearby Hindu temple.

The water beneath the bridge was less that two metres deep, according to reports, however many of the victims were crushed by falling debris.

The bridge, which is normally used by only a small number of pedestrians at a time, collapsed while large crowds were crossing on their way to the ceremony.

It is unclear whether anyone remains missing, officials resumed the search for victims on Monday morning.
