Hungarian authorities are investigating a mysterious explosion in central Budapest on Saturday night amid speculation it may have been a deliberate attack on police.

Two officers were injured in the blast which happened shortly after 10.30pm on a main thoroughfare in a tourist district of the capital.

Unconfirmed local reports speak of a man having been seen attacking the police; one eyewitness has been quoted as saying he saw nails scattered at the scene.
