An Iranian cyclist has died following a crash during the Paralympics.

Bahman Golbarnezhad, who was 48, was competing in the C4-5 road race when he was involved in an accident during a descent on a mountainous stretch of road. An investigation has been launched.

Golbarnezhad, who had been involved in the sport for twelve years and competed at London 2012, leaves a wife and a child.

The Iranian Paralympic Committe paid tribute: “An exemplary Paralympic sportsman who, with love and energy, tried his best to promote the name of Iran and to make all of us proud and at the end he gave his life for this.”
