Slovakia’s Peter Sagan outsprinted defending champion Chris Froome to claim stage 11 of the Tour de France on Wednesday.
The Team Sky rider, along with his lieutenant Geraint Thomas, jumped into the wheel of Sagan when the Tinkoff rider broke away from the bunch 12km from the finish with his team mate Maciej Bodnar of Poland.
Sagan, already a stage winner in Cherbourg, outsprinted Froome to take the day’s laurels and deliver an almost final blow to Mark Cavendish in the green jersey race.
Sagan, Froome and Bodnar finished six seconds ahead of the pack, which means the reigning champion extended his lead by 12 seconds going into Thursday’s stage, which will be shortened because of expected violent gusts of wind at the top of Mont Ventoux.
