Major terror alert in Brussels after suspect arrested near main shopping centre

A major anti-terrorism operation is underway in Brussels after a man suspected of carrying explosives was arrested.

The incident took place near the city 2 shopping centre in the heart of the Belgium capital.

Security sources are now reported to have said no explosives were found on the suspect.

The bomb alert triggered a meeting between Prime Minister Charles Michel and the national crisis response centre.

Roads around the City 2 shopping centre were sealed off following the incident at 5:30am local time.

Belgium’s terror alert remains at three, one step below the maximum level following the bomb attacks on Brussels airport and the city’s Maalbeek metro station in March.

The strikes, claimed by ISIL, killed 32 people.
