After an extremely tough stage 1 in ‘‘Paris-Nice’‘:http://www.letour.fr/paris-nice/2016/us/ the Frenchman Arnaud Démare thrilled the home fans with a sprint victory in Vendôme.

The 195k route was littered with dirt roads and punchy climbs and far from fitting the description as a pure sprint.

The eventual stage winner had a very strong lead out to thank for his victory.

Sky’s Ben Swift was a powerhouse, but was pipped on the line.

The Orica-GreenEdge rider Australia’s Michael Matthews held on to the yellow jersey he won in Sunday’s prologue.
