Milan Fashion Week closed with iconic Italian designer Giorgo Armani’s autumn collection dedicated to luxurious black velvet.

The looks literally unfolded with hidden chiffon pleats, contrasting floral stripes and soft and rounded silhouettes. Offering something for everyone, the hemlines varied from just above booties to tapered at the ankle or flowing. Jackets were short and swingy.

The colour palette was mostly dark, with floral prints in faded pink, blue and green. Footwear included nude ankle boots with shiny black heels and pointed toes.

Missoni unveiled its new collection in a disused factory, a perfect setting for the “urban poetry” themed outfits proposed for next winter. The brand made the wise decision to return to basics with knits in all possible shapes and patterns.

The family-run fashion house also added vertical stripes to its trademark horizontal zig-zags for leggings, overcoats and tunics. Outerwear included capes and blankets worn as ponchos. Long scarfs finished many looks and sheer ankle socks were worn with sandals and booties.

Marni creative director Consuelo Castiglioni has built up a loyal following for her combination of luxury paraphernalia and avant-garde looks.

Her latest collection had all the trademarks including odd hems, fur shrugs, oversized sleeves and a vibrant colour palette. The puffy sleeves added a romantic touch to capes and coats and demonstrated the collection’s exaggerated proportions. Ribbed shirts with athletic stripes gave a sporty touch and were tucked into high-wasted pants or skirts. Dresses were short and decorated with big colorful sequins or cut out of Marni’s trademark prints. Pointy pumps and boots were built on sculpted, metallic heels.

Princesses are big business – and Dolce & Gabbana know it. The designers offered a fairtytale wardrobe for their latest womenswear line in Milan.

Against a stage backdrop made of an open story book, golden carriage and a clock ticking towards midnight, the duo sent models out in a typically colourful and vibrant collection of richly-embellished dresses with patterns referring to tales like ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Snow White’. There were also plenty of floral and cat prints. Sparkles and sequins were omni-present in this glittering collection perfectly accessorised with Cinderella-style transparent and golden heels.
