Former Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo and Jesé Rodríguez both struck in the second half to give Real Madrid the advantage after the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Roma.

The visitors went ahead through the Portuguese international’s deflected shot in the 57th minute before Jesé made sure of the win with a clinical finish in the late stages of the game.

Elsewhere, Wolfsburg took a big step towards qualifying for the quarter-finals following a 3-2 win over Gent in Belgium.

German sensation Julian Draxler opened the scoring in the 44th minute before doubling his side’s advantage in the second- half with arguably the best goal of the night.

Max Kruse found the back of the net in the 60th but Sven Kums and Kalifa Coulibaly each struck in the dying moments to give the Belgians hope ahead of the second leg in Germany.
