Preparing for disruption to energy services and reducing Europe’s dependency on Russia for supplies.

That is the aim of a new EU energy security package, which sets out a range of measures to boost resilience.

The bloc’s energy commissioner says “solidarity will be enshrined in law” to make sure energy gets to those in need.

“All countries will have to ensure the supply of households and all essential social services, in case of a crisis,” said Miguel Arias Cañete, EU Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy.

“In practice, this means member states will have to give priority to protected consumers in neighbouring countries over non-protected customers at home.”

For some countries, Russia, which provides around a third of the EU’s energy, is the only option.

Moderating demand, opening up new supply options and boosting energy production in Europe are all thrusts of the new package.

The European Commission says it will boost transparency and create more solidarity between members.
