BMW enjoys bumper January sales

BMW has reported a 7.5 percent rise in monthly car sales in January.

In Europe it enjoyed an increase of 10.9 percent, helped by double-digit growth in Italy, France and Spain.

China sales were up by 8.4 percent.

By contrast sales in the United States slipped 4.0 percent as winter storms disrupted large parts of the country and deterred car buyers.

The BMW brand delivered 133,883 vehicles. BMW group sales – including the Mini and Rolls-Royce brands – also rose by 7.5 percent, to 152,879 vehicles.

In the luxury-car sales race BMW’s rival Audi, which is owned by Volkswagen, also saw strong demand for its sport-utility vehicles in Europe and China in January with total sales up 4.0 percent on January 2015.

Volkswagen’s flagship premium brand sold a record 143,150 cars last month Audi said, powered by models including the Q5 and Q7 SUVs.

Mercedes saw a 20 percent increase in sales to 150,814 cars for the month.
