France’s largest telecoms operator Orange has been in talks to buy certain assets from Bouygues Telecom, according to a report by Bloomberg.

It quoted sources as saying the talks covered Bouygues’ phone and television businesses.

Bouygues responded by saying in a short statement that it had no plans to exit the telecoms and television sectors.

Orange also dismissed what it said were ‘press rumours’.

Analysts say regulators would be likely to oppose a combination of the two telecoms businesses, which would radically shake up the industry in France.

The Bloomberg report said the possible alliance was one of several possibilities Orange was considering.

It added that in a deal with Orange, Bouygues would retain a minority stake in the combined business.
