Turkey’s pro-Kurdish opposition leader Selahattin Demirtas has escaped an apparent assassination attempt.
The rear window of his car was found to have been hit by a bullet after he’d driven in the city of Diyarbakir in the largely Kurdish southeast of the country.
Afterwards on his twitter account he wrote “ Death is God’s command”. The car has been taken away by police.
Demirtas led his People’s Democratic Party (HDP) through a successful election campaign in June, seeing it cross the threshold to enter parliament for the first time. HDP supporters have recently suffered several attacks – one of them thought to have been carried out by ISIL sympathisers killed more than 100 people in Ankara.
