The US state of Texas plans to execute a man convicted of killing an off-duty police officer 14 years ago.

33-year-old Licho Escamilla was 19 when shot Christopher James in a row outside a Dallas nightclub in 2001.

If the execution goes ahead, it will be the 12th in Texas this year, the highest number of any state.

Escamilla is scheduled to die by lethal injection at 6pm local time – 0100 Central European Time.

He has unsuccessfully tried to appeal the sentence, claiming mitigating evidence of an abusive upbringing and substance abuse problems.
